Wells caped off his preparation with a six length win in the Grand National Steeplechase at Sandown on Sunday.
He continued his great form with a well-deserved and gallant victory over Bashboy who was brave in defeat.
Wells had been racing in great form with placing's in all of his previous jumping starts behind smart horses and in the top races.
He had been thwarted by very heavy tracks which he got through, but was unable to produce his best. It was a relief that the rain stayed away on Sunday to have the track just a little better, Wells relished the better going and was able to produce his best to take out the feature race.
It was an excellent effort as it was his first start over the bigger fences, although making an error at the second fence he then settled down to jump beautifully from then on.
John Allen gave him a fantastic ride to allow him to get into a rhythm and then took the shortest way home to jump the last well and draw away on the line for a decisive victory.
